According to Hayley love is a subject of ridicule, a myth created by hopeless romantics.

When Hayley makes a resolution to declare her loose lifestyle era R.I.P, it’s all good in theory…

That is until she meets Daniel Stark, a well-respected, mid-thirties business man who is known for his short temper, lack of steady relationships as well as his strict preserve of his private life.

Opinionated, sharp tongued Hayley accidently steps into his office leaving Daniel resolved to put Hayley in her place and have her in his bed.

Both Hayley and Daniel can’t avoid the immediate instigation of the attraction between them.

In a unanimously agreed upon verdict by Hayley and her two best friends, Ian the gay self-absorbed, aspiring model and Natasha the witty, borderline neurotic soul mate, Daniel Stark is to be Hayley’s pure physical attraction, emotions aside era closure.

Will it indeed be a closure, or a beginning to something neither Hayley nor Daniel ever bargained for…

So I finished Layers about a week and a half ago and am just now writing the review. For those of you that know me you know this is way outside of my normal routine. Usually I finish a book and two minutes later I’m typing up my review. So why did Layers make me break my normal routine? I have NO clue! The book was great. I loved the characters, the writing was cool and I finished it in one sitting. And yet, I just can’t find the appropriate words to review it. I know I MUST read the sequel. I know I want you all to grab a copy. I know I want to root for Daniel and Hayley. But I don’t know how to properly and coherently review this book! GRR!!!!

Ok, meltdown is over. Sorry you had to see that.

I think the reason I’m so stuck on this review is because Layers brought a different and unique take on adult fiction. It’s actually really ironic considering I JUST wrote an open letter to authors asking them to change things up in contemporary books. And while I can’t say Layers is contemporary exactly, it’s easy to read the blurb and assume that it’s just your typical billionaire meets girl kind of story. But it wasn’t! It really wasn’t!

First off the characters were REAL. They had normal problems and instead of whining about every single thing that didn’t go their way they acted like big girls and boys and solved the problem! Even though Daniel was a über successful multi-billionaire he was actually really humble and laid back! No “let’s jump on my private jet and run to Rome real quick.” He worked his butt of and you were able to appreciate that hard work and the success he earned through that hard work. He had his “issues” but he didn’t really dwell on them, like some characters I’ve come across.

Then you have Hayley. I genuinely enjoyed her! Hayley was the kind of girl I could see myself hanging out with (if I ever left the house). She was sarcastic and determined and funny. When she first met Daniel (at his company) she had no clue who he was and ripped him a new one. It was funny and cute and once everything came to light it made an absolutely adorable “how we met” story. But what I loved most about Hayley was that she balanced her romantic relationship, her friendships and her work flawlessly! We’ve all seen those ladies who get a new boo and all of a sudden their friends, their family and even their jobs take a backseat. It’s annoying and ridiculous and I’m so happy that Ehrlich was able to convey that you don’t have to sacrifice your friends or job just because you have a new romantic partner.

All in all, the characters (especially Hayley’s best friends), the plot and the writing were great! I can’t say the plot was 100% original but it was different and I’m very happy that I couldn’t guess what would happen every step of the way. I definitely say give it a shot folks. This one may just surprise you. 😉
