Happy August lovelies! And welcome to the third annual Arc August event!
Thank you to everyone who has signed up and have diligently spread the word across the internet and an extra special thanks to those who have shown how excited they are! I wasn’t sure we would host this year but after seeing so many positive reactions I am so happy we are!
Since it’s been a few weeks since the sign up post went live I wanted to do a quick recap of the challenge.
ARC August is a month long event in which we, as book nerd who grab all the shiny without thinking, tackle all those ARC that have been piling up. These can be eARCs, physical ARCs, unsolicited, trade show ARCS (BEA/ALA/etc), ARCs that released months (cough -years) or ARCs that aren’t releasing until May of 2016! You read YOUR ARCs, at YOUR pace! The object is to get that pile down. If that means you only read one ARC for the month guess what? That’s one less book in that pile! If you obliterate your pile and there is nothing left by the 20th? Best excuse to go request more! I want this to be a LOW pressure, HIGH fun event. I want there to be no “I failed so hard” tweets or thoughts. I want you to have fun and bask in every single page you manage to finish.
But enough of the mushy let’s get into Shelly and I’s ARC August goals!

Everything, Everything
By Nicola Yoon
Releasing September 1st, 2015
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
Don’t Fail Me Now
By Una LaMarche

Michelle and Leah only have one thing in common: Buck Devereaux, the biological father who abandoned them when they were little.
After news trickles back to them that Buck is dying, they make the uneasy decision to drive across country to his hospice in California. Leah hopes for closure; Michelle just wants to give him a piece of her mind.
Five people in a failing, old station wagon, living off free samples at food courts across America, and the most pressing question on Michelle’s mind is: Who will break down first–herself or the car? All the signs tell her they won’t make it. But Michelle has heard that her whole life, and it’s never stopped her before….
Una LaMarche triumphs once again with this rare and compassionate look at how racial and social privilege affects one family in crisis in both subtle and astonishing ways.

The Scorpion Rules
By Erin Bow
Releasing September 22nd, 2015
A world battered by climate shift and war turns to an ancient method of keeping peace: the exchange of hostages. The Children of Peace – sons and daughters of kings and presidents and generals – are raised together in small, isolated schools called Preceptures. There, they learn history and political theory, and are taught to gracefully accept what may well be their fate: to die if their countries declare war.
Greta Gustafsen Stuart, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan-Polar Confederation, is the pride of the North American Prefecture. Learned and disciplined, Greta is proud of her role in keeping the global peace, even though, with her country controlling two-thirds of the world’s most war-worthy resource — water — she has little chance of reaching adulthood alive.
Enter Elián Palnik, the Prefecture’s newest hostage and biggest problem. Greta’s world begins to tilt the moment she sees Elián dragged into the school in chains. The Prefecture’s insidious surveillance, its small punishments and rewards, can make no dent in Elián, who is not interested in dignity and tradition, and doesn’t even accept the right of the UN to keep hostages.
What will happen to Elián and Greta as their two nations inch closer to war?
Illuminae
By Amie Kufamn & Jay Kristoff
Releasing October 20th, 2015
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.
This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Truthwitch
By Susan Dennard
Releasing Janury 5th, 2016
On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.
In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.
Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.
Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.
Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.
That’s right! I picked 13 books for ARC August and I am TERRIFIED yet horribly excited to see just how many I actually finish and love!
DONE!
That was a lot more work than I thought! But LOOK AT ALL THE PRETTIES!!! Are any of these on your ARC August Goal list? Tell us in the comments and tweet us using the #ARCAugust hashtag! Oh, and don’t forget to link your goal post up below!
This is my first time participating and I’m so excited! Hopefully I can read around 10 books this month (:
I have Hunter too and The Dead House is one of my “bonus” books if I get through my earlier releases. Scorpion Rules would be next up and I’m crying because it’s sitting on my shelf taunting me!!
That’s just motivation to get through those other books!!
Good luck dearie!
I have a lot of E-ARCs and also then there are the ARC’s that I got from BEA. SO I’m aiming for 15 books, but I think this will be fun and make me at least try to get my review pile done. Thanks for hosting this challenge.
I just got approved for more books this past week, so it’s going to be an intense month. I have 11 on my list (original goal was 4). But I only really need to read 9, since 2 are published already. I have Hunter, Mechanica, and Everything, Everything on my list as well. So excited to see how ARC August turns out for me!
Hunter is also on my list for this month. I started it this morning and it seems cool so far, but it has mainly been world building. I adored Everything, Everything and The Dead House. The Dead House was super creepy (at least to me it was!) Reawakened was good too, I loved all the Egyptian culture involved. Good luck on your goals ladies, all those books look awesome!
YOU BOTH HAVE SUCH AMAZING BOOKS ON YOUR LISTS!!!! Truthwitch! Illuminae!Six of Crows o.O
This is my first time participating in ARC August, and I’ve got a mix of to-be-released books, and a few ARCs that’ve already been published (I fell back on my reviewing a bit last year :() Its only once I finish these that I’m going to allow myself to request more, so hopefully, that should be enough incentive to complete ARC August successfully! All the best, you guys! 😀
This is the first I’m going to be a part of this event but I’m really looking forward to it. It’s the kick in the butt I need to get these ARCs read.
[…] Hey guys, so quick announcement here! I’m going to be participating in ARC (advanced copies of books) August this month. This challenge is hosted over at the lovely blog Read. Sleep. Repeat. […]
[…] sure how I almost missed it, but I’m jumping on the band wagon of Octavia @ Read. Sleep. Repeat.’s ARC August reading challenge- to get some of those arcs off my weighed down tbr […]
I am signing up for the first time! I have a few queued up already… excited for this one!
These goals are so fantastic, there are many books I want to read here including Truthwitch, Six of Crows and Illuminae! I’m looking forward to my first ARC August 😀
Before I make a post – I just want to see if it is too late to join. I found out about this from Dee’s Book Blog (thanks, Dee! You are awesome!) and since I have a pile of ARC’s, especially now that NetGalley just approved four more for me, I would like to do this. I don’t have a link yet, since I just posted, but if it isn’t too late, that will be up tomorrow. I do have a goal of getting 7 ARC’s read for August, and if I can count my post from tonight before “officially” joining, that knocks one off. This is a great idea and hopefully I can join in – even if I read and review sports books!
So many great books! My first read for ARC August was Every Word by Ellie Marney and I LOVED it. Can’t wait to see what you think of it, Shelly!
Well, I’m too late for the linky, but I did make a goal post, setting it at 14. That is basically all the ARCs I have yet to be read, and my goal is to finish it all in two weeks. XD Let’s see if I can do it.
I really want to read The Accident Season! I have Reawakened on my ARC shelf, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Good luck this month!
I missed the linky as well since I’m late signing up. I didn’t see anything that said when sign-ups were closed so I just assumed I could still join. Here’s my post. I’m looking forward to getting some more ARCs read.
Awesome picks for your goals btw! I have several of these on my tbr and some of them are also books I’m planning on reading this month.
i love Arc August!! Here is my goal post link – http://pleasefeedthebookworm.com/arc-august-declaration/
