Can a romcom-obssessed romantic finally experience the meet-cute she always dreamed of or will reality never compare to fiction, in this charming debut adult novel from Kerry Winfrey.
Annie Cassidy dreams of being the next Nora Ephron. She spends her days writing screenplays, rewatching Sleepless in Seattle, and waiting for her movie-perfect meet-cute. If she could just find her own Tom Hanks—a man who’s sweet, sensitive, and possibly owns a houseboat—her problems would disappear and her life would be perfect. But Tom Hanks is nowhere in sight.
When a movie starts filming in her neighborhood and Annie gets a job on set, it seems like a sign. Then Annie meets the lead actor, Drew Danforth, a cocky prankster who couldn’t be less like Tom Hanks if he tried. Their meet-cute is more of a meet-fail, but soon Annie finds herself sharing some classic rom-com moments with Drew. Her Tom Hanks can’t be an actor who’s leaving town in a matter of days...can he?
I borrowed a copy of this book from the library. This in no way influences my thoughts on the book or this review.
I’ve been getting slowly more into adult romances and after all the buzz around this one, I knew I had to read it! I’m a big fan of rom-coms so it’s no surprise that I immediately fell in love with this main character and her story.
Annie has always dreamed being the next Nora Ephron, writing the next great rom-com and maybe getting a real life meet-cute of her own. When a movie starts filming around her favourite writing spot, she accidentally spills coffee on Drew Danforth, a cocky actor who is the opposite of everything Tom Hanks’ characters represent. But as Annie and Drew grow closer together, Annie is starting to think that maybe Drew is more rom-com worthy than she thought.
I really liked Annie and Drew! I felt that they were both so genuine and well-written. Winfrey truly created some amazing characters and the setting in Waiting for Tom Hanks was absolutely enchanting. Even though it takes place in small-town Ohio (which we usually don’t associate with enchantment), I felt that the world-building was very well done and that the setting was such a key part of the story.
I also really liked all of the secondary characters and I think that Winfrey’s writing was great. For such a short novel, the author truly has a gift for creating such a captivating story. I really loved Annie and her best friend, Chloe, and I was so happy to hear that the sequel is about Chloe. The romance itself was delightful and while it wasn’t as steamy as some of my usual adult reads, I found it charming because of its rom-com nature.
Overall, Waiting for Tom Hanks is a delightful novel and I’m so happy that I read it! I am eagerly anticipating the sequel as I can’t wait to read more books that take place in this world.
